Over the years I’ve insured clients who represent the entire range of drag
racing, literally all the way from Top Fuel down to Junior Dragsters.
I’ve been lucky to meet many of my clients and to make many great
friends. Also, we’ve insured a
bunch of really neat and interesting race cars.
With their permission, from time to time I will feature a few of them
here. I hope you enjoy their cars
and stories as much as I have.
Bill Horton
Ric
Fleck – 2002 Camaro Pro Mod
When
Ric called in it sounded like he was going to insure a pretty typical race car;
a 2002 Camaro Pro Mod. Nothing too abnormal about that, right? But
when I got the photos, I found I was looking at a mean looking black car with a
huge hood bubble like a turbo car, but only one central air duct. When I
looked at the documentation, I saw that the car had a 588” Procharger equipped
BBC. I figured that it ran in the sevens. When Ric told me it had run 6.38
@ 217 (with a Powerglide) I almost fell on the floor!
Ric
runs in a great circuit called the Quick 8 Outlaws (www.q8outlaws.com)
that run a bunch of races in the
Carolinas
. Their rules are pretty simple. 1) It must have doors. 2) It
must have a Powerglide. End of rules. If you are down that way I’d
urge you to catch some of their races; these cars are intense, and they are
fast, with some knocking on the door to the three second zone in the eighth
mile. Ric’s car is very competitive, and he’s building a new Corvette
with an even bigger Procharger motor which should edge him towards the five
second zone in the quarter. Stay tuned.
Jack
& Barbara Camarigg – Worthy Top Dragster & Vega Super Gas
Most of my customers are true sportsman racers, and while many are very
successful not too many can say they’ve been TV stars. But Barbara
Camarigg can. Barbara was featured on the TV reality show ‘Miami Ink’
last year in her capacity as instructor at Nelson Hoyos’ Driven2Win driving
school. She had a televised match race (in which she had to hit the brakes
pretty hard to lose) with one of the featured tattoo artists which was a lot of
fun to watch. The production of the episode was hectic and required Jack
and Barbara to loan the school cars some parts so the episode could be
completed!

Barbara
is a banker who moonlights as a successful bracket racer and driving instructor.
She has held her own in the extremely tough world of South Florida bracket
racing winning races at Moroso and
Bradenton
. Before moving to Florida Barbara was Division 7 Rookie of the year in
1988 and was track champion at Palmville raceway. With her husband Jack as
crewchief they’re looking for more wins in 2008
